Humans dam it like beavers; the environment logs court wins; sturgeon rebound on the East Coast; four gorillas make it back to the wild; a tiny butterfly survives on the brink; and puffins thrive.
"The butterfly’s decline coincides with the shrinking of tallgrass prairies and the introduction of neonicotinoid pesticides—neonics for short—which are derived from tobacco and have been banned in Europe because of their harmful effects on pollinating insects." I just saw a letter to Bayer, the largest manufacturer of these chemicals, from Natural Resources Defense Council. Like business plans for peace (because peace is far more profitable than warring), defense of the natural wildernesses and worlds feels like a real uphill climb. But people like you Amanda make it feel easier.
HI Amanda, I enjoyed the segment on beaver dams, In Australia we do not have beavers but in the semi arid monsoonal north flat land we use spreader levees which you may wish to highlight. They use foot high earth levees for the spreading of water out of the channels to give it time to soak into the hydrophobic clay .
Watching the YouTube segment on the Poweshiek Butterfly gave me such hope for species restoration. Once we learn to decenter humans and find our proper place within ecosystems, the solutions feel well within reach. Thank you for providing the resources for me to become better educated on how we're able to restore land and species for the benefit of the planet.

Thanks Julie! I loved the video, and definitely read Bryan's piece if you ever have a moment.
If some folks construct analog beaver dams, is anyone making digital beaver dams?
I had the same thought 😂
